Spandau pupils learn to measure climate data
A new CCC project “School as a local actor in the neighbourhood” brings pupils in Berlin-Spandau closer to climate protection: In spring 2023, a stationary SenseBox was installed in the school on Jungfernheide. The SenseBox is a digital environmental measuring station based on a mini-computer equipped with sensors. It records environmental data such as temperature, relative humidity, fine dust pollution, illuminance, UV intensity and air pressure. This data is transferred via WLAN to a global open SenseMap:

As part of the project, the school in Siemensstadt contributes to a worldwide network of freely available climate data that can be used by actors from science, politics and civil society.
The installation of the SenseBox (assembly, programming, installation) was carried out by the students themselves. They also learned the basics of programming in order to be able to present their findings visually. By dealing with the collected data, the students also get a feel for scientific work
After the summer holidays, a visualisation of the SenseBox data will be integrated on the school’s homepage. In addition, the pupils will tell the users in the district office about the SenseBox and all its possibilities. A SenseBox will now also be installed there. In addition, a series of public events is planned for the neighbourhood that will focus on climate change, its consequences for the district and climate protection measures.
