Freie Universität Berlin
Sustainability and climate protection
Freie Universität Berlin acknowledges its special responsibility in the research and education system to work toward a sustainable world. It aims to integrate sustainability and climate protection into decision-making and operational processes at all levels. This commitment is being delivered using a “whole institution approach” that sets out to link research, teaching, knowledge transfer and campus management systematically. Ensuring participation from all actors is a particular priority.
Freie Universität Berlin declared a climate emergency in December 2019, the first German university to do so. In doing so, it underscored the special urgency of climate change mitigation and pledged to achieve climate neutrality as an institution by 2025.
Freie Universität Berlin takes an active part in scientific discourse on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (SDGs) and in delivering them within its own sphere of responsibility.
